The final of the 54th Eurovision Song Contest starts tonight with 25 countries battling it out to become Europe’s elite, for one night anyway. Russia won last year, therefore they will host the 2009 version as do all winners of the competition. The venue is Moscow, Russia’s capital city, with a local start time of 11.00pm.

Norway are strongly fancied to win the competition but fairly often an unexpected nation pop their heads in front.

Ireland are the current record holders of Eurovision titles with six wins. They are closely followed by France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom – each with five wins. Although France and the United Kingdom were tied with Spain and the Netherlands in 1969 which counted as a victory each.
